The Ruqaa script is relatively one of the modern Arabic calligraphies, it was invented by the Ottomans in 1280 Hijri, Its rules were set during the reign of Sultan “Abdul Majid Khan” by his advisor and calligrapher “Mumtaz Bik “, It was used for editorial purposes, such as administrative papers and letters, hence the name (The word “RUQAA” means an old type of paper that was used in the past for letters and administrative communications..)  so it became the script of official transactions in all state departments. Even it became called Ottoman calligraphy in Turkey. 

At one time, it replaced the Naskh script which became a sacred script specialized in writing the Qur’an and Holy hadiths

Who published the Ruqaa font in the Arab world?

The Ruqaa font wasn’t only famous and used in Turkey, but it became very popular, especially in the Arab Mashreq.

The calligrapher “Naguib Bey”, the scribe of “King Farouk”, was the first to use it in Egypt, then The first editor-in-chief of “Al-Ahram” newspaper “Adly Boulos”, furthermore it was promoted in Lebanon by the calligrapher “Kamel Baba”.
